SANTA CRUZ, California — Marquette claimed a 4-1 opening round win over Menlo (Calif.) College before rain halted semifinal play Monday between the Golden Eagles and Cal Poly during the semifinal round of the MacKenzie Matchplay, hosted by San Francisco at Pasatiempo G.C.

Marquette, which is the top-seeded team in the MacKenzie Matchplay thanks to its No. 38 (Golfstat) national ranking, got convincing quarterfinal wins from Hunter Eichhorn (4-and-3) and Oliver Farrell (5-and-4).  Matthew Bachmann rallied from an all square match thru 16 holes with a par on No. 17 and a birdie on No. 18 for a 2-up win to close out Marquette's victory over NAIA-member Menlo.

The Golden Eagles led Cal Poly 3-and-2 before the weather stopped play.  Eichhorn completed his second win of the day with a 4-and-3 win over Jimmy Castles. Bachmann and Austin Kendziorski were leading their matches.

Play will resume, weather permitting, on Tuesday.
