NEW GLARUS — The longer the day went Wednesday (and, goodness, did it go looooooong) and the more the Verona girls golf team was able to accomplish, the more the Wildcats wanted to add to their considerable haul from the WIAA Division 1 sectional tournament they hosted at Edelweiss Chalet CC.

Meet medalist? They had her in senior Lauren Shorter, who shot 2-under-par 34 on the front nine and a 3-over 75 for the day to win by two strokes.

Trip to the WIAA state tournament? They earned the program's fourth state berth in five years by shooting a 345 and earning a share of the team title.

Well, sort of. Middleton matched Verona's 345 after senior Payton Hodson signed for her 77 that, like most of the rounds on what turned out to be a picture-perfect October day, took more than 6½ hours to shoot, forcing the teams back to the first tee for a playoff to see who would get the plaque.

A Shorter birdie on No. 1 helped the Wildcats salvage a 17-17 tie and force a second extra hole. A birdie by No. 4 golfer Caitlyn Ott for Verona on No. 2 forged yet another 17-17 tie and that's when the sun literally set on this showdown.

With not enough daylight to continue, WIAA assistant director Tom Shafranski directed meet manager Mark Kryka of Verona to break the tie via a scorecard playoff of back-nine team scores. Middleton won the criteria, 175-181, which — in the Wildcats' world — meant they left with everything except the hardware and a slightly later tee time Monday at University Ridge GC.

And as darkness engulfed the countryside, they were OK with that.

"Our main goal was to get to state and we made it," Shorter said after her team came within four shots of its season-low set in a triangular here with Madison West and Madison Memorial. "We definitely wanted the win, but we're still going to state so that's OK."

Verona was clearly motivated to get there.

Last year, the Wildcats came within three strokes of earning the section state berth out of the Middleton sectional. Shorter qualified individually and tied for 34th place after rounds of 86 and 89.

Last week, Verona shot 354 and finished a disappointing third at the Middleton regional behind the host Cardinals (341) and Madison West (350), which found a way to save 48 strokes off its score at the Big Eight Conference tournament a week earlier. The Wildcats got the wake-up call.

"The fast start (was key)," said Verona coach Jon Rebholz, whose team took a 164-169 lead on Middleton at the turn behind Lauren Shorter's 34 and Courtney Shorter's 38 on the front nine. "Last week, I don't know where we sat (after) nine. The front nine here is kind of a comfort zone for us. As coaches, that helps us stem the tide a little bit when things are getting rougher on the back nine when the pressure comes out the last few holes."

In the end, Verona counted Lauren Shorter's 75, Courtney Shorter's 84, Alexis Gaillard's 90 and Ott's 96. The Wildcats, one of only two schools in the field to post five scores below 100 (Waunakee being the other), threw out Claire Swain's 98.

Middleton, meanwhile, rode its 1-2 punch of Payton Hodson (77) and Kate Meier (83) to its six consecutive state berth and 18 overall. The Cardinals also counted an 92 from Grace Peterson and a 93 from Haley Dunn, but didn't earn its spot in the playoff until Hodson made the second of just two pars among the 48 golfers in the field (Lauren Shorter was the other).

"Both teams, I feel, were very close," Hodson said. "I definitely thought that finishing today we'd come pretty close in team score. It's pretty cool that we actually tied and got to play a playoff against them. ... And then we kept tying."

At times, Middleton coach Becky Halverson was fit to be tied watching her team struggle to stay in the title chase.

"I think we left a lot of strokes out there," Halverson said. "I think the girls would agree there was a lot that they left out on the course that we need to work on coming into state. Luckily, we get another shot at it and we get to play 36 more holes."

Klaire O'Reilly-Dye of Monona Grove (82), Sam Soulier of Waunakee (82) and Lillian Knetter of Madison West (83) all qualified for the WIAA state meet as individuals. It will be the first state appearance for all three golfers.
