CITY OF INDUSTRY, California -- Jordan Niebrugge had been waiting 50 minutes, all by himself, on the 10th tee Monday on the Eisenhower Course at Industry Hills GC when Dan Woltman's group caught up and a match made in Milwaukee was formed.

Woltman, a former University of Wisconsin golfer from Beaver Dam, left his group to join his friend from Mequon after Niebrugge had one of his playing partners not show up for the open qualifier for this week's Genesis Open and another quit after nine holes. The company for the back nine was great and the conversation was casual -- they chit-chatted like two mini-tour golfers who hadn't seen each other in awhile -- even if the golf wasn't quite good enough to make it into this week's PGA Tour event.

Woltman bogeyed his final hole to shoot 4-under-par 68 and Niebrugge played his final 12 holes in 3-under to shoot 2-under 70. Both fell short of the 66 it would have taken to join what was a 5-for-2 for the last two of the four spots available in the 18-hole qualifier.

"It's kind of frustrating," Woltman said of his final hole, where he pulled his tee shot on the 627-yard, par-5 behind a bush, chopped out onto the fairway and made a scrambling bogey. "It generally takes 5(-under) here and to be at 5-under on a par-5 with a good chance to make birdie and then walk off making bogey and now post 4-under, it's frustrating. But, at the end of the day, the game's progressing nicely."

While saying he didn't always trust the new left-to-right ball flight he has been adding to his game, Woltman couldn't argue with the results.

He birdied three holes on each nine — Nos. 1, 3 and 9 on the front and Nos. 11, 13 and 15 on the back — to go with one bogey on each site (Nos. 6 and 18). His 67 held up as the low round in the clubhouse for the better part of an hour before 14 other golfers beat his score. Richard Lee of Phoenix (64) and Zecheng Dou of Cleveland (65) grabbed the first two spots while former UCLA golfer Parker McLachlin of Scottsdale and Rob Oppenheim of Orlando grabbed the final to spots in a playoff.

"Overall, my game is a lot better than I thought it would be at this stage of the year," Woltman said. "I've only played for six days out here. I'm happy with that."

Woltman, a two-time Wisconsin State Open champion (2009, '11) was also happy to have the chance to play with Niebrugge, the 2011 State Open champion.

They talked about everything from the Milwaukee Bucks to the December opening of The Shake Shack in downtown Milwaukee. It was just the two of them plus Woltman's sister Melissa, who caddied for her brother.

"I saw him this morning warming up in the dark and said hi to him and said to play well" said Woltman, who had a 7:10 a.m. tee time off No. 10, one group behind Niebrugge.

"It was a lot of fun," Niebrugge said. "It's always good playing with him. He played well today. I haven't played with him much, but he's a very consistent player."
