Mark Bemowski 2004 State Open

Mark Bemowski at the 2004 State Open.

Mark Bemowski, the most accomplished amateur Wisconsin has produced, did something that had never been done, and likely will never occur again: He won the State Amateur and the State Senior Amateur titles in the same year.

At 58, he shot 70-70-72-74 at Oneida Golf & Riding Club to win the State Am by three shots, and he won the Senior Am by six.

He also came within a whisker of successfully defending his U.S. Senior Amateur title, losing 1-up to Mike Rice in the 36-hole final. It was the third consecutive year he reached the championship match, an amazing feat in itself.

Bemowski played in four USGA championships in ’04 but passed on the U.S. Amateur Public Links, saying, “I’d hate to lose to Michelle Wie.”
