Charlie Danielson

Osceola native Charlie Danielson

Charlie Danielson's comeback efforts from knee surgery hit such a significant milestone Monday that the Osceola native rewarded himself with a week at the beach next month — Pebble Beach, that is.

Danielson shot rounds of 3-under-par 67 at Northwood Club and a 1-under 70 at Bent Tree CC, both near Dallas, during U.S. Open sectional qualifying and then survived a 3-for-2 playoff for the final spots in the 119th U.S. Open at the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links in California. He was one of 10 golfers to advance out of the only domestic qualifier not to be held June 3.

Brendon Todd, 33, a former University of Georgia golfer who has won once on the PGA Tour and three times on the Web.com Tour since turning pro in 2007, shot rounds of 65 and 66 and, at 10-under 131, shared medalist honors with Canadian Nick Taylor, 31, who shot 66-65. Taylor was one of two former low amateurs in a U.S. Open to qualify Monday, joining native Texan Scottie Scheffler, who tied for fifth with 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir.

For Danielson, 25, a former University of Illinois golfer who had his entire 2018 season cut short by knee surgery, it marked the second time in his young career he had to go extra holes in a sectional qualifier to reach the U.S. Open. In 2016, he beat PGA Tour golfer Tony Finau with a par on the first playoff hole to qualify for the U.S. Open at Oakmont (Pa.) CC.

"To get through to my second U.S. Open is pretty cool and I am looking forward to another great experience," Danielson wrote in a text message to Wisconsin.golf after he and Oklahoma State sophomore Austin Eckroat outlasted Cody Gribble of Dallas with a par on the first extra hole.

"It sure has been a rollercoaster last 18 months being sidelined with knee issues. I am very grateful for my family, friends, and team who have stuck by my side and continued to support me. I feel like I am just as happy for them, as I am for myself."

There was much to be happy about as Danielson left Dallas and headed for Vancouver, B.C., where he will begin the season on the Mackenzie Tour/PGA Tour Canada on Thursday at the Canada Life Open, an event that his good friend and current Web.com Tour golfer Jordan Niebrugge won a year ago.

Danielson had six birdies, one bogey and one double-bogey in a morning 66 at Northwood that left him one shot off the pace heading to Bent Tree in the afternoon. There, Danielson opened bogey-bogey, got one shot back with a birdie at the par-3 fifth hole and then returned to red numbers with back-to-back birdies starting the back nine before bogeying No. 12 and birdieing No. 16 to stay at 1-under and then finishing par-par to join the playoff.

"My caddie told me (where things stood) after hole 15 so I knew I needed to make at least one birdie on my last three holes," Danielson wrote. "(I) finally had a downwind hole and I had a 7-foot eagle putt on 16, which I missed. Played the last two holes very solid and figured I would end up in a playoff.

"I made par on the first playoff hole and fortunately that was enough."

Danielson, the local qualifying medalist at Chaska (Minn.) Town Course, said he has never played Pebble Beach, which will be playing host to its sixth U.S. Open. But he cannot wait to get there and be among those trying to deny newly minted repeat PGA champion Brooks Koepka in his bid to win a third consecutive U.S. Open championship.

"I have never played Pebble but I am sure I will do a lot of prep work in the weeks to come!" Danielson wrote.
