Jacob Beckman | 2019 WPGA Junior Championship boys winner

Jacob Beckman of Middleton won both the boys overall title, top, and the 13-15 division over runner-up Ezekiel Boos of Waukesha.

MILWAUKEE — Jacob Beckman collected the first of his Wisconsin PGA Junior Chamionships winnings Tuesday at Dretzka Park Golf Course, packed his stuff in the car and drove a few miles away with the hope of collecting more.

Once the Middleton golfer arrived at Brown Deer Park Golf Course, however, he was told that Sparta's Austin Erickson had shot 3-under 32 on the front nine and Kaukauna's Brock Hlinak a 1-under 34 to boost them into a share of the lead at 2-under, one stroke ahead first-round leader James Gilmore of Verona. Not only that, he learned, Erickson and Hlinak had birdied No. 10.

"I was expecting to see a head-on battle between those two guys," said Beckman, who had followed up his 71 Monday at Brown Deer Park with a 72 Tuesday at Dretzka Park to finish his week at even-par 143 and win the boys 13-15 division. "But then a few putts didn't drop. Some higher numbers were scored than I would've thought. And, the next thing you know, I was on top."

Indeed, one-by-one, the members of the final group fell out of contention after Beckman arrived to walk the final eight holes and witness the various state of collapse for himself. When it was over, Beckman was left with a one-stroke victory over Brookfield's Jack Lutze, whose 69 was low for the day, while De Pere's Jamozzy Skenandore shot 71 and finished third, two shots back at 145.

First-round leader James Gilmore of Verona Hlinak were the first to depart the chase for a trip to the National PGA Junior Championship, which will be played July 30 through Aug. 2 at Keney Park GC in Hartford, Ct.

Gilmore, who fell one shot behind Hlinak and Erickson at the turn after a 2-over 37, knocked his tee shot in the water on the par-3 11th hole and made the first of two double-bogeys on the back nine — the other came at No. 14 and the start of a three-hole stretch he played 4-over. His 78 dropped him into 10th place at 5-over 148.

"The front nine, I shot 2-over and I was hitting the ball really well," Gilmore said. "The par-3s kind of killed me. Through 14, I was 6-over on the par-3s and I had pars on every other hole."

Meanwhile, after matching bogeys with Erickson on No. 11, Hlinak parred his next two holes before a disastrous two-hole stretch in which he double-bogeyed the par-3 14th hole and took a quadruple-bogey 9 on the 15th hole. He shot 34-42 for his 76 that left him in a tie for seventh at 4-over 140.

"It was just mis-clubbing on 14, the par-3, hitting a 9-iron from 172; I thought it was a more right-to-left wind and it was more into it," Hlinak said. "And then it was a bad display of short game. On (No.) 15, it was a flared tee shot right and then just trying to make too much of what I had. I was trying to pull out a par when I should have just taken my medicine and made 6."

Erickson's woes, meanwhile, were more extended through the back nine.

His bogey at No. 11 was the first of four in a row and six over his next seven holes (he parred the 15th hole where Hlinak made bogey). After shooting 32 on the front, Erickson shot 41 on the back for his second consecutive 73 and a share of fourth place with Beaver Dam's Zak Kulka (70) and Delafield's Benjamin Pausha (71) at 3-over 146.

"We were both in a rhythm there, going into the back nine and then playing No. 10 well," Erickson said. "We went into that par-3, tougher par-3 and it was kind of windy. We both hit some shots with swings that we didn't really have all day. I think it kind of shook us a little.

"We went to that next hole and both hit tee shots that were nothing like what we had done all day, either. It just put us in a little bit of a slump there and the whole group kind of progressed toward not playing great and we kind of fed off of each other. It took awhile to get out of that."

All the while, Beckman was walking along, finding it hard to believe what he was seeing.

"It's pretty crazy; I finished my round about four hours ago and it was very strange to have to hang around," said Beckman, whose age division had morning tee times each day, Wednesday at Brown Deer and Thursday at Dretzka. "It was cool to go out there and watch them. I was more nervous out there watching them than I was at any point in my round, which is a unique feeling. But I'm really excited to move on and be able to play (at the national tournament) in Connecticut now."

It was a little less dramatic at Dretzka Park in the girls division.

Green Bay's Jo Baranczyk capped a memorable two-week stretch of golf with her second victory in three starts, winning the WPGA Junior for the first time by eight strokes over Greenfield's Cassandra Psuik. Baranczyk's win follows another at last week's Lake Arrowhead Invitational in Nekoosa and a runner-up finish Tuesday at U.S. Girls Junior Championship local qualifying in Berlin, where she took one of two spots in next month's championship, to be held at SentryWorld in Stevens Point.

"I am very proud of myself," Baranczyk said after shooting 71 at Brown Deer and 74 at Dretzka. "At Mascoutin, (qualifying for the U.S. Girls Junior) has been a goal of mine for a long time so that was an exciting day. And these last two days, two new days, and, overall, I played the same golf pretty much. I think (Wednesday) was probably the best. But (it was all) just pretty steady."

And it wasn't easy. Not only did she defend one title (Lake Arrowhead) and win another for the first time (her previous best was a fifth), but Baranczyk has the weight of a college choice shadowing her through her summer schedule as the reigning WIAA Division 1 state champion tries to make a decision on where she will play in college by the end of her junior season at Bay Port High School this fall.

"It definitely matters," Baranczyk said of her recent run of success. "Now that I am able to (college) coaches (per NCAA rules), I am going to try to figure out where I'm going to end up, hopefully by the end of the year. This summer means a lot so these last few tournaments help a lot."

For Psuik, Thursday's runner-up finish in the girls competition creates all kinds of opportunities going into her freshman season at Greenfield High School, which does not sponsor a girls golf team.

She said golf is her favorite sport and she could elect to play on the boys team in the spring, but she also likes softball — "It's a big deal," she said — and it is played in the same season. In the meantime, Psuik, who works with Wisconsin Golf Hall of Famer Mary Hafeman at Missing Links GC in Mequon, will get her first taste of national competition at the National PGA Junior Championship next month, earning Wisconsin's second spot in the event because Baranczyk earned the first one by winning at Lake Arrowhead.

"Oh my gosh, I can't believe that I'm going to be able to go to this," said Psuik, whose final-round 73 at Dretzka was her career-best by four strokes and moved her ahead of a distinguished group of golfers her age, sharing a few laughs after the round with many of them. "I've talked to them before and I really like hanging out with them. They are very good influences on me. They are very good golfers, also."
