Just call her “Ace”

Carolyn Barnett-Howe wasn’t happy with her game after shooting an 80 – a score The Sweet Spot would take in a heartbeat – so the PGA teaching pro from Appleton headed to the practice range at her winter home in Port St. Lucie, Fla., “to get this figured out.”

It must have been a heck of a lesson. Nearly one year to the day after Barnett-Howe and her husband, Steve Howe, made aces on back-to-back swings, she made another hole-in-one – her sixth – on the 160-yard third hole on the Dye Course at PGA Village.

If anything could top that, however, it was her score: 69.

“It was a good lesson,” Barnett-Howe wrote on her Facebook page. “I think I’ll sign up for follow-up next week.”

Woodlands course at Lawsonia set to reopen after renovation

The Woodlands course at the Golf Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake is scheduled to reopen May 14 after an extensive renovation.

Craig Haltom of Oliphant Golf supervised the renovation, which included redesigning and rebuilding bunkers on all 18 holes; rebuilding green surrounds on all 18 holes; extensive tree trimming; fairway modifications on some holes; a new green on No. 18, and the opening of views to Green Lake on No. 3.

“The renovation to the fairway bunkering and green surrounds are dramatic and incredible,” said Josh Carroll, the PGA head professional at Lawsonia. “We’re truly excited to showcase the Woodlands course to our returning players and to see their reactions to all of the improvements.”

Tap-ins, lip-outs and double-breakers

TV ratings for the Masters were the lowest for a springtime playing of the tournament since Nielsen started tracking numbers, perhaps at least partly the result of increased streaming on mobile devices. The Masters had an average audience of 9.4 million viewers / 5.52 rating, with a peak of 12.89 million viewers as the leaders played the final holes. That still makes it the most-watched golf tournament since the 2019 Masters. … Big Fish Golf Club in Hayward and the Irish Course at Whistling Straits were two of six “lesser-known” Pete Dye courses profiled in a story on linksmagazine.com. …Youth on Course, a non-profit organization dedicated to opening doors, supporting dreams and transforming the lives of young people through opportunities on and off the golf course, has named PGA Tour player Harold Varner III as its first national ambassador.
