BOULDER CITY, Nevada — Mia Seeman of South Dakota State won the battle with Mikayla Smith of Xavier (Ohio) for low Wisconsin golfer in a Jackrabbit Invitational field that was seemingly full of women's golfers from the state.
Smith and her Musketeers, however, won what became a thrilling finish over the Seeman and the host Jackrabbits Tuesday at Boulder Creek Golf Club.
Seeman, a former WIAA Division 1 state champion from Milton, shot a 2-over-par 74 and, with a 54-hole total of 10-over 226, finished second to teammate Teresa Toscano, who completed her wire-to-wire victory and prevailed by four shots. Smith, the 2017 Wisconsin Women's State Golf Association Match-Play champion from Appleton matched Seeman's 74 and tied for fourth at 230.
Xavier, however, placed three golfers in the top five and all four scoring golfers in the top 10, shooting a final-round 305 to edge South Dakota State by one shot for the team title. Smith, a senior from Appleton Xavier, helped get the job done, playing her final 11 holes in even-par to record the best finish a collegiate career that now features seven top-10s over four years.
Likewise, Seeman turned in the best performance of her freshman season. She birdied Nos. 14 and 15 to put South Dakota State in position to catch Xavier, but she bogeyed No. 18 one group ahead of Toscano, who also bogeyed the pivotal, 377-yard finishing hole that the Jackrabbits' four scoring golfers played in 3-over while the Musketeers played the hole in even-par.
Seeman and Smith were two of three Wisconsin golfers to finish in the top 15. North Dakota State's Taylor McCorkle, a sophomore from Oregon, shot 78 to finish tied for 12th place at 20-over 236.
Meanwhile, Wales' Abby Cavaiani of Missouri State (83-79-78) tied for 24th, Middleton's Alexis Thomas of North Dakota State (86-88-74) tied for 44th and North Prairie's Katelyn Martin (89-85-81) tied for 59th.
North Dakota State's 302 in the final round was the lowest by any team over the three rounds The Bison shot a 969 and finished eighth as a team.
Xavier, South Dakota State and North Dakota State will return to action Thursday in St. George, Utah, at the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational, a two-day event at Sunbrook GC.
