Five of Wisconsin's brightest college golf stars are among 84 golfers competing this week in The Patriot All-America tournament at The Wigwam Resort in Lichtfield Park, Ariz.
Marquette University golfer Hunter Eichhorn of Carney, Mich., St. Thomas (Minn.) golfer Emmet Herb of Middleton, University of Illinois golfer Piercen Hunt of Hartland, University of Minnesota golfer Thomas Longbella of Chippewa Falls and Vanderbilt University golfer Harrison Ott of Brookfield are all in the field for the 54-hole event, which begins Tuesday. Longbella is the reigning Wisconsin State Amateur champion; Ott won the 2020 Wisconsin State Open.
The tournament is the combined effort of the Arizona Golf Association, the Golf Coaches Association of America and the Wigwam Golf Resort in conjunction with the tournament’s beneficiary, the Folds of Honor Foundation.
The unique aspect of this tournament is that it also honors the military throughout the week. At the opening ceremony, each golfer receives and carries a commemorative PING golf bag that bears the name and branch of a fallen or wounded hero from their hometown or school. After the tournament, the bags are sent to the player's school to be auctioned to benefit the Folds of Honor charity.
Additionally, all of the golfers have the opportunity to visit Luke Air Force Base, the training center for F-16 and F-35 fighter pilots, to meet with the base's general, fighter pilots and crew, and get a behind-the-scenes tour.
