There is an adage older than persimmon woods that says what goes up must come down. And so it goes with the unseasonably warm temperatures in Wisconsin.

The end of the golf season in Wisconsin appears to be hanging in the balance of the amount of snow predicted to blanket the state overnight Saturday into Sunday and the patience of course to see if a slight warming trend by Tuesday allows some courses to re-open, if only for a day or two.

As much as 4 inches of snow was predicted to fall across the middle part of the state overnight Saturday into Sunday. A band of snow ranging from 1 to 3 inches was expected on a line from La Crosse south and east to the southern edge of the Milwaukee area. A trace of snow was projected on a similar line from Prairie du Chien to Burlington.

A few areas of the state saw snow already Friday evening. Prairie Woods Golf Course in Avalon, near Janesville, posted a photo to its Facebook page of its course covered by a solid dusting of snow.

Many of the state's destination courses saw winter coming and called it a season earlier this week.

A historic 2021 golf season in the Kohler area — highlighted by the rescheduled 2020 Ryder Cup — has come to an end. Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run officially closed for the season Nov. 8, according to a representative at the Destination Kohler call center, after golfers got their final rounds in over the weekend on the Irish Course at Whistling Straits and the original collection of 18 holes at Blackwolf Run.

A slew of other destination courses around the state have now followed suit.

The Golf Courses of Lawsonia in Green Lake closed for the season after play Nov. 8. University Ridge Golf Course in Madison and Wild Rock Golf Course in Wisconsin Dells closed Nov. 11. Bullseye Golf Club in Wisconsin Rapids will close the following day, just ahead of the first wave of snowfall that coated the fairways in Western Wisconsin and far northwest Wisconsin.

In northeast Wisconsin, golf on the famous Door County peninsula has come to an end at popular Peninsula State Park Golf Course in Egg Harbor, but will linger through Wednesday at Maxwelton Braes in Bailey's Harbor. After that, however, temperatures will begin their gradual descent into the 30s throughout the region.

Already, several courses in northwest Wisconsin — after seeing thermometers spend last weekend in the mid-60s — have elected to call it a golf season. At least a half-dozen courses announced via Facebook over the weekend that Sunday was the final day this fall that they would be taking tee times, seeing rain on the radar Monday and high temperatures bottoming out in the mid-30s by Sunday.

Temperatures in the Milwaukee area are forecast to remain above freezing for most of the next 10 days, but that didn't keep Milwaukee County from closing Dretzka Park at the start of the week or announcing plans for Brown Deer Park and Greenfield Park to close for the season starting Friday. In the Madison area, however, overnight lows are expected to drip into the high 20s overnight beginning Friday, but Odana Hills Golf Course and Yahara Hills Golf Course are among several courses that remain open.

The following courses have closed for the 2021 season or announced dates they intend to do so, according to a Wisconsin.Golf scan of Facebook, other social media channels, website postings and emails. Courses not listed that have welcomed their final golfers for 2021 can contact Wisconsin.Golf's Rob Hernandez at to have their names added.

Nov. 2: It's bound to happen and in some parts of the state it already has as the end is coming to 2021 Wisconsin golf season

The end of the 2021 golf season in Wisconsin is coming. In fact, it has already arrived at nearly two dozen golf courses, including at least one in every region of the state.

How soon the very end of the golf season arrives throughout Wisconsin, however, remains the million-dollar meteorological question.

The Milwaukee area is showing high temperatures in the low to mid-50s into the middle of next week, according to the Weather Channel forecast for southeast Wisconsin. The Madison area, which woke up Tuesday to temperatures in the upper 20s, will also see high temperatures reaching 57 by Sunday and staying there for three or four days. Ditto for the Eau Claire, Wausau and Green Bay areas.

The Rhinelander area, which reported snowflakes dancing in the air on Halloween night, is expected to see its high temperatures dip below 40 by Nov. 15. The Bayfield area has spent the last two days there and, after a brief warming spell this weekend, will see those frosty highs return by the end of next week.

Two of the state's top destination courses — Erin Hills near Milwaukee and Sand Valley south of Wisconsin Rapids — called it a season during the middle of October. Kohler Golf has not yet announced an official closing date for Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run, but will begin taking reservations Tuesday for its end-of-season golf shop sale, which has been scheduled for Nov. 19-20.
