FOND DU LAC — Piercen Hunt put on a clinic again Wednesday and at least one other golfer in his group during the final round of the Wisconsin State Golf Association Junior Boys Championship learned as much watching as doing.

"I learned a ton just watching him play one round of golf," Dylan Brown of Reedsburg wrote in a text message to Wisconsin.Golf of his playing partner from Hartland. "He is the best player I've ever played with. I ... learned what it takes to put away a victory when it is laying in front of you. He looked very relaxed the entire round and made it look simple on the back nine."

Indeed, Hunt — the first golfer to ever win WIAA state championships as a freshman and sophomore — closed out a wire-to-wire victory at Rolling Meadows GC like someone who had been there before. And will be again.

Hunt birdied the 18th hole to close out a 3-under-par 69 — including a 4-under 32 on his final nine holes — that left him with a 12-under 204 total for the 54-hole event and a seven-stroke victory over Austin Thyes of Sheboygan Falls. Brown shot 73 and finished tied for third at 3-under 213 along with Matthew Raab, Hunt's high school teammate at Hartland Arrowhead who shot the low round of the day — a bogey-free 68 — to climb in the top five.

For Hunt, his winning score was the second lowest since the event went to a stroke-play format in 1971. Former Arrowhead golfer Charlie Delsman shot 201 at Rock River Hills GC in Horicon to win the 2003 championship.

"I can’t really put into words how happy I am to have won this week the way I did!" Hunt wrote in a text to Wisconsin.Golf after joining past winners that include former PGA Tour golfers Don Iverson of La Crosse, Bob Mann of Milwaukee, Steve Stricker of Edgerton and Mark Wilson of Menomonee Falls. "To be able to add my name to the trophy is a great feeling and was one of my biggest goals going into this summer season."

It didn't start out as easy as Hunt eventually made it look.

After a bogey on his first hole, Hunt birdied the fourth hole only to bogey the eighth and turn in 1-over 37. Thyes, who will be a senior at Sheboygan North, also bogeyed the first hole, but birdied No. 6 and made the turn in even-par 36, trimming Hunt's lead to four shots with nine holes remaining.

"I knew I was capable at the start to play well, but I knew I really couldn’t catch Piercen," Thyes wrote in a text message to Wisconsin.Golf. "After the turn I was only four (shots) back and I had about a 10-footer for birdie (on No. 10) and Piercen was a little farther than mine. Piercen drained his (for birdie) and I missed mine so that sort of ended my hopes of trying to win."

Both golfers went par-birdie-par on Nos. 11 through 13 before Thyes bogeyed No. 14 and Hunt birdied No. 15 to lead by seven. Thyes got to within six shots with a birdie on No. 17, but Hunt answered with his birdie on No. 18.

"The birdie on 10 was big for me to get back to even on the day (and) my birdie on 14 was the one that finally gave me some breathing room," Hunt wrote, praising Thyes for keeping him sharp. "Austin played great all day and I really enjoyed the group. We played together a few times my freshman year and it was great to get to play together again. He is a fantastic putter and his length off the tee was very impressive."

But the distance Hunt put between himself and the field over 54 holes spoke volumes for how far the junior-to-be at Arrowhead High School could go in this game as he continues to rack up victories as significant as the one Wednesday.

"It’s a great stepping stone in my career towards many other tournaments that I hope to compete for!" Hunt wrote.
