The PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe announced jointly Tuesday that the Junior Ryder Cup, scheduled for Sept. 20-21 at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa, has been canceled because of ongoing Covid-related travel issues for the European Junior Ryder Cup party.
U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team members will still play an exhibition match at Whistling Straits on Sept. 22. The U.S. team also will be introduced at the Ryder Cup Opening Ceremony and will be invited to watch the Ryder Cup competition on Sept. 24.
“We are deeply disappointed for the talented young athletes on both sides of the Atlantic who were working hard to earn a place in this wonderful match,” the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe said in a joint statement.
First played in 1997, the contest between six boys and six girls from the United States and Europe, all 18 years old and under, will return in Italy in 2023.
The 43rd Ryder Cup will take place Sept. 24-26 at Whistling Straits. Plans remain on course to hold the contest with full spectator attendance and under the guidance of public health authorities.
