Sparta senior Austin Erickson shot rounds of 77 and 86 at the WIAA Division 1 state tournament in 2019. He finished tied for 58th place at 19-over-par 163 as an individual state qualifier for the Spartans.
1What was your most memorable high school golf highlight or accomplishment? During my high school career, my most memorable accomplishment is being (Mississippi Valley) conference player of the year every year.
2Besides golf, what were you best known for at your high school? Besides golf I was best known as “Sniper” at my high school because of my shooting ability in basketball. I set the individual game three-point record on senior night (with eight made three-pointers vs. La Crosse Aquinas as captured on this video link).
3How did you get your start in golf? What age? Who were your early influences? I started playing golf at the age of 3. My dad was a big golfer so he got me into it as well. Ever since then, he has been my biggest influence.
4What do you remember about your first varsity match in high school? I remember how nervous I was at the first varsity match. I hit my first tee shot out of bounds and shot 49 on the front. Then I calmed down and came back with a 35 on the back.
5Who was your most influential high school teammate and why? My most influential teammate was Brett VonRuden. He was the (No.) 1 on our team my freshman and sophomore year. His ability and daily challenge for me helped me get better.
6What was your favorite high school tournament and why? My favorite high school tournament is the Wisconsin Dells Invite. It is super fun to stay overnight as a team, plus I shot 67 the first day.
7What did you miss most without high school golf this spring? I missed the competition of the game the most. Hitting shots in pressure moments is as fun as it gets for me.
8What did you miss most about not going to school for classes this spring? I missed getting to enjoy my end of time at the school.
9What are your plans for this fall? What college do you plan to attend? My plans this fall are to play some competitive golf, get better, and continue my education. I will be attending Iowa Central and I’m very excited about it.
