Wauwatosa East/West senior Ben Monty shot back-to-back rounds of 78 at the 2019 WIAA Division 1 state boys golf tournament at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison. His 12-over-par 156 total tied him for 26th place and helped East/West finish fifth in its first state appearance since 2004 and the 38th state appearance between the two schools dating to 1925.

1What was your most memorable high school golf highlight or accomplishment? Competing at the (WIAA) state golf tournament.


2Besides golf, what were you best known for at your high school? Ping-pong stud.


3How did you get your start in golf? What age? Who were your early influences? My dad got me started in the fifth grade.


4What do you remember about your first varsity match in high school? Brutal weather.


5Who was your most influential high school teammate and why? Adam Garski. He as a great mentor my freshman and sophomore years.


6What was your favorite high school tournament and why? The (WIAA) state tournament.


7What did you miss most without high school golf this spring? The van rides.


8What did you miss most about not going to school for classes this spring? Seeing my friends.


9What are your plans for this fall? What college do you plan to attend? Attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison to study civil engineering in the fall.

Mark Schaefer

Wauwatosa East/West senior Mark Schaefer shot rounds of 78 and 82 at the 2019 WIAA Division 1 state boys golf tournament at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison. His 16-over-par 160 total tied him for 41st place and helped East/West finish fifth in its first state appearance since 2004 and the 38th state appearance between the two schools dating to 1925.

1What was your most memorable high school golf highlight or accomplishment? Winning sectionals in 2019 and going to state as a team.


2Besides golf, what were you best known for at your high school? I played varsity baseball as a sophomore and led the team in strikeouts and wins.


3How did you get your start in golf? What age? Who were your early influences? I started in eighth grade because all of my friends (played golf).


4What do you remember about your first varsity match in high school? I beat three of the five players on my team at Wanaki Golf Course (in Menomonee Falls), but somehow didn't play varsity for the rest of the season.


5Who was your most influential high school teammate and why? Adam Garski. He taught me how to mentally play.


6What was your favorite high school tournament and why? The MACC Fund Tournament at Erin Hills. A great cause.


7What did you miss most without high school golf this spring? The awesome van rides to our tournaments.


8What did you miss most about not going to school for classes this spring? Seeing all of my friends one last time before college.


9What are your plans for this fall? What college do you plan to attend?  Attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison to study biology in the fall.

Wauwatosa East/West senior Dan Soboleski shot rounds of 85 and 80 at the 2019 WIAA Division 1 state boys golf tournament at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison. His 21-over-par 165 total tied him for 70th place and helped East/West finish fifth in its first state appearance since 2004 and the 38th state appearance between the two schools dating to 1925.

1What was your most memorable high school golf highlight or accomplishment? Winning sectionals my junior year.


2Besides golf, what were you best known for at your high school? APPSE/Debate team.


3How did you get your start in golf? What age? Who were your early influences? My dad taught me early, but grinding Hansen (Park GC) with the boys started the greater motivation to play better.


4What do you remember about your first varsity match in high school? Washington County Invitational as a freshman. I was nervous, but conditions were decent and I ended up playing well.


5Who was your most influential high school teammate and why? Ben Monty. After he broke his wrist snowboarding his sophomore year, I thought his season was over. But he defied the odds and played consistently in the 70s.


6What was your favorite high school tournament and why? The WIAA state tournament. The whole experience made it memorable.


7What did you miss most without high school golf this spring? Getting to have one last team season before I will never compete like that again.


8What did you miss most about not going to school for classes this spring? Playing golf on a beautiful day.


9What are your plans for this fall? What college do you plan to attend? General carpentry.


Charlie Somers, Tosa

Charlie Somers

Wauwatosa East/West senior Charlie Somers shot rounds of 74 and 77 at the 2019 WIAA Division 1 state boys golf tournament at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison. His 7-over-par 151 total tied him for 12th place and helped East/West finish fifth in its first state appearance since 2004 and the 38th state appearance between the two schools dating to 1925.

1What was your most memorable high school golf highlight or accomplishment? My placement at the 2019 (WIAA) state tournament.


2Besides golf, what were you best known for at your high school? Playing volleyball and Future Business Leaders of America.


3How did you get your start in golf? What age? Who were your early influences? I started playing golf at an early age (probably around 6 years old) because my dad has always loved the game.


4What do you remember about your first varsity match in high school? I remember being nervous at first, but after a few holes I was fine.


5Who was your most influential high school teammate and why? Adam Garski. He always pushed me and everyone to be better.


6What was your favorite high school tournament and why? Hidden Glen (Golf Club in Cedarburg). It's a beautiful course and I had one of the craziest shots ever on the island hole.


7What did you miss most without high school golf this spring? I miss the team camaraderie the most.


8What did you miss most about not going to school for classes this spring? I miss the everyday interactions with my friends at school.


9What are your plans for this fall? What college do you plan to attend? I will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison this fall.
