Joe Fricker, Mequon Homestead

Mequon Homestead junior Joe Fricker watches his drive on the 16th hole at North Shore CC in Mequon during the 2021 Homestead boys golf sectional.

MEQUON — As much as Joe Fricker tried to treat Tuesday as just another day, Tuesday kept giving the Mequon Homestead junior every reason to come to terms with the fact it will be a day he remembers for a long, long time.

Fricker got to play 18 holes on a warm, muggy day at historic North Shore Country Club, where the greens were as fast as the heartbeats. He made his first career hole-in-one. He led the Highlanders to the WIAA sectional title against, arguably, the deepest field of the eight Division 1 sectionals.

Yet, a Tuesday that would provide Fricker with so many precious moments didn't feel any different than any other day when he woke up to a chance to help Homestead wrap up its 32nd WIAA state tournament appearance.

"Not at all," Fricker said. "Not really. (It was) nothing special."

They say that tradition never graduates and one long look around this place Tuesday supported that idea as it relates to Homestead, a storied program that has three state championship and three state runner-up trophies.

Over on the practice green, 2012 WIAA state champion Jordan Niebrugge, working hard to regain his form on the Korn Ferry Tour, passed the time working on his short game. Earlier, 2020 graduate Josh Teplin — another former Highlander who survived two of the three sectionals in which he played before COVID-19 canceled his senior season — stopped by to collect scores as golfers made the turn. And there were more, too, coach Steve O'Brien said.

And what a show they saw from O'Brien's much-beloved "Homeslices."

Buoyed by Fricker's 71, a 76 from senior Ty Mueller and a pair of 80s from senior Christian Sobczak and junior Luke Ladd, host Homestead — ranked second in this week's Golf Coaches Association of Wisconsin state rankings — won with a 306 total. Top-ranked Kettle Moraine was second ... at 307.

"We played really well," Mueller said after his team shot a sizzling 145 on the front nine and enjoyed an 11-stroke lead over Cedarburg and Kettle Moraine at the turn. "The course had some challenges. The pin locations were tough. They had the greens rolling perfect, really fast as usual. ... I felt really good. When I heard about the other guys and what they were sitting at (after nine holes), they were all playing really solid. Obviously, we didn't finish the way we wanted to, but we gave ourselves a good space of comfort."

Kettle Moraine, meanwhile, played its best golf when it mattered most.

The Lasers were tied with Cedarburg at 156 after nine holes while just two strokes ahead of Hamilton (Sussex) and four clear of Germantown. But they got sub-40 scores from all five golfers on the back nine and surged ahead of the pack, ultimately counting 76s from seniors Jackson Vinopal and Jackson Cain and sophomore Alex Koenig and a 79 from senior Ben Pausha.

"It means a lot to get through this sectional," said Kettle Moraine coach John Sams, whose program has seven top-10 finishes in eight previous state appearances, but none higher than second (2009). "We knew Homestead would be a challenge. We knew this golf course would be a challenge. With Cedarburg and Hamilton (Sussex) out there, we had a lot of teams that could catch any one of us if we had a bad day. We're very excited."

So, too, was Hamilton (Sussex) junior Michael Addie, who shot 4-under-par 68 to earn medalist honors by two strokes over Cedarburg senior Nathan Theama. They joined Waukesha West senior Connor Nelson (74) in qualifying for the state tournament.

Addie was 4-under through seven holes before making a double-bogey 6 at No. 9 to shoot 34 on the front. He picked up three more birdies on the back nine to get to 5-under at one point before a bogey at the par-3 17th hole dropped him back to 4-under, which is where he stayed after a par on No. 18.

"Every putt I stood over, it felt like it was going to go in," Addie said. "When I knew the putter was hot, I think it was on (No.) 7. I'd made (three) birdies, but they were all inside of 15 feet. And then I made a 40-footer on (No.) 7, which was really the kick-start to the rest of my round."

"I just tried to play steady golf on the back nine. I wasn't trying to push anything because I knew if I tried to push anything, I didn't want anything to go wrong."

Fricker got the feeling nothing could go wrong for himself or the Highlanders after his ace on the par-3 fourth hole. He used an 8-iron to cover the 162 yards for his first career hole-in-one.

"It was a huge confidence-booster," Fricker said. "It probably paved the way for the rest of my round. It wasn't the purest shot, but it was on-line. I think it just one-hopped and then rolled into the hole. I don't know, though, because I couldn't see (it). I just heard the cheering after."

It would be the first of many memorable moments on this sun-splashed day at North Shore, the third of Homestead's three designated home courses but one the Highlanders seldom use in competition. Fricker and Co. didn't act like it.

"It's my first time playing here in competition," Fricker said. "I didn't really do anything special out here; I just tried to have fun. That's what I've been trying to do for the last couple rounds. I've been taking things a little too seriously.

"When I try to have fun, I notice I play a lot better. That's what I try to do today."
