2021 WIAA Madison Memorial boys golf sectional champion Middleton

From left, Drew Sjowall, Alec Sosnowski, Jacob Beckman, Charlie Jambor, Dain Johnson and James Baker of the Middleton boys golf team pose with the 2021 WIAA Division 1 Madison Memorial sectional championship plaque at Blackhawk CC in Madison.

MADISON — Based solely on the reaction of his coach Monday as he came off the 18th green, Charlie Jambor figured he had done something pretty special.

Middleton coach Tom Cabalka hugged the freshman he had inserted into the team's lineup at the No. 5 position for the WIAA Division 1 Madison Memorial sectional. Those close to the Cardinals' program know that Cabalka — an old-school coach who spent years as the defensive coordinator for the school's football team — is not exactly the hugging type.

"My coach — how do I explain this? — he's not a very soft guy," Jambor said. "When he came up to me and said 'Come here!' and gave me a hug, I knew that I'd played well."

It was a stark contrast to the reception Jambor received from Cabalka when he arrived at Blackhawk CC with a push cart in tow. Push carts are not the veteran coach's preferred method for his golfers to tote their clubs in competition and Cabalka was tempted to have Jambor return his to the car.

Given the heat (literal and figurative) that Jambor was about to face in his WIAA postseason debut, Cabalka relented and allowed him to to use the cart. Jambor showed his appreciation in a way Cabalka never saw coming, firing an even-par 72 — falling to Madison Memorial senior Silas Pickhardt in a one-hole playoff for medalist honors — and helping his team win the sectional with a spectacular 297 score to secure its 21st WIAA state tournament berth.

Jambor knows a little something about playing under pressure, however.

On the eve of the tournament, he made a 4-foot par putt on the par-3 18th hole at Blackhawk CC to edge sophomore James Baker by one shot at the end of a two-day, 36-hole qualifier for another shot at doing something special at the No. 5 spot. Special doesn't begin to describe what Jambor did, parring the first seven holes on each side and bouncing back from his lone bogeys on the penultimate holes with birdies on each of the finishing holes.

"(Someone) asked me if I was surprised (by Jambor's play) and I said 'No, I was shocked,'" Cabalka said. "His best round has been a 78. I think his average is 86, maybe 85. To come out and do what he did (Monday) was absolutely amazing."

It set the tone for the Cardinals, who return only senior Jacob Beckman off its state runner-up team from 2019, the last time the WIAA tournament series was played. The 2020 season was canceled entirely by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Junior Alec Sosnowski added a 73, Beckman a 75 and sophomore Drew Sjowall a 77 as Middleton bettered its season-best by six shots in breaking 300 for the first time this season. The Cardinals threw out a 78 from No. 3 golfer Dain Johnson, a freshman who matched Jambor's 36 on the front nine.

"It just shows how deep we truly are," said Beckman, a University of Wisconsin recruit whom Cabalka credits for setting such a strong example for his younger teammates to follow. "'Coach C' made the right choice for the five today. I don't know if you've been following, but (Nos.) 4 and 5, the whole year, has been back-and-forth trying different guys every week. Charlie was a great pick for (Monday)."

Madison Memorial's Silas Pickhardt, meanwhile, picked a great time to play one of his best rounds of a rollercoaster senior season.

He made the last of the Spartans' four counting pars on the treacherous 18th hole in the final group of the first wave to close out his 72 and give host Memorial a 314 team score. The Northern Michigan recruit then had to wait out the five groups of the last wave and a brief weather delay, spending a portion of it on the practice green behind the 18th green and the rest of it behind the first green at the practice tee, anticipating a playoff — either for medalist honors, the second of two state team berths or both.

It all came down to the final group and Waunakee freshman KC Nickel, whose tee shot on the 141-yard par-3 came to rest about 4 feet over the green in the second cut of rough. His ensuing chip ran about 20 feet past the hole, but his par putt came oh-so-close to forcing a playoff.

"It was tracking; it needed maybe half-a-roll even," Warriors coach Betsy Zadra said of the Nickel's putt that led to a tap-in for her team's 315th stroke of a tension-filled day, one more stroke than Madison Memorial. "One more roll and it would have been in. It was right up there on the lip, but it didn't have a chance because it was uphill."

News of the outcome traveled quickly.

Memorial sophomore Henry Pickhardt, whose 39 on the back nine allowed the Spartans to count a second 83 (with No. 2 golfer Isaac Schmidt) instead of one of two 84s (with No. 5 golfer Sam Godager) behind his brother's 72 and No. 4 golfer Ethan Williams' 76, raced to the practice tee to tell Silas what had happened. One year after what was to have been the first of two years playing high school golf together was wiped out by a global pandemic, the Pickhardts will enjoy their one season together all the way to the very end next week at the WIAA Division 1 state tournament at Wild Rock GC in Wisconsin Dells.

"When I found out we were going to state, he just tackled me into the sand bunker (next to the first green)," Silas Pickhardt said, describing the wild range of emotions that led up to Memorial's 18th state tournament berth and first since 2017. "I honestly don't think I've ever been more nervous than I was standing on the putting green, watching Waunakee and Onalaska hit their shots into (No.) 18. That's where I really felt it ... every shot counts.

"I know KC's putt ended up an inch short. And I know a lot of Waunakee guys and I feel kind of bad for them. But my brother's on the team and it was really cool to share that moment with him."

On this day? The emotions of a WIAA boys golf sectional tug at the heartstrings of young and old.

Just ask Cabalka, a longtime assistant to legendary Middleton coach Dewey Stendahl before succeeding him as the head coach 15 years ago. His No. 5 golfer was on the sidelines last week when Waunakee edged the Cardinals on their home course at Pleasant View GC in Middleton by a single stroke to win the WIAA regional and then — just like that — Jambor was in his arms Monday after he did something his veteran coach can't remember one of his golfers ever doing with so much on the line.

"When a kid does something like that today?" Cabalka asked. "I couldn't help it."
