What to watch

Few conferences in Wisconsin have promoted and witnessed the growth of girls golf quite as much as what is now being called the CloverCroix Conference.

And, technically, it's not even a conference at all.

"We do not have a recognized conference but instead we have an informal league consisting of five teams," Eau Claire Regis/Altoona coach Marc Lundquist wrote in his preseason survey.

Osseo-Fairchild/Fall Creek, Stanley-Boyd and Eau Claire Regis/Altoona represent the Cloverbelt Conference. Colfax, which has represented the Dunn-St. Croix Conference the last two years, adds Dunn-St. Croix member Elk Mound to its program to form the league's latest cooperative program. And, finally, Flambeau represents the Lakeland Conference.

In two CloverCroix mini-meets this fall, all five programs have fielded full five-player varsity lineups. All five also brought at least one JV golfer, including Colfax/Elk Mound, which brought five.

"There are multiple kids that we are adding from Elk Mound this year that previously played for the boys golf team," Colfax/Elk Mound coach Ryan Krall wrote in his presason survey, "so we have some experience coming back even if it isn't during the girls golf season."

What the CloverCroix has lost from last season are two of its brightest stars.

Osseo-Fairchild | Izzy Popple

Izzy Popple is one of five returning golfers in 2020 for the Osseo-Fairchild/Fall Creek girls golf team.

Abby DeMoe, a four-time WIAA state qualifier who won the last two Cloverbelt Conference championships, has moved on to UW-La Crosse. Ariel Heuer of Osseo-Fairchild/Fall Creek, the 2019 overall Cloverbelt champion who played three years on the Fall Creek boys team before her school formed a girls golf co-op, is waiting to start her freshman season at Viterbo University in La Crosse.

Osseo-Fairchild/Fall Creek returns the four golfers who payed behind Heuer on the team's Division 2 state qualifying team, led by Madyson Rosman and Izzy Popple. Regis/Altoona also returns four golfers led by WIAA Division 1 sectional qualifier Elli Anderson, whose program was poised to drop to Division 2 before COVID-19 caused 25 percent of the WIAA's girls golf schools to opt to play girls golf during an alternate fall sports season scheduled to begin in late March.

Stanley-Boyd, Flambeau and Colfax/Elk Mound appear to be neck-and-neck in the race for third place in the CloverCroix.
