What to watch

A golden era of girls golf at Franklin reaches a critical crossroads as the Sabers move forward without coach Brandy Johnston, who resigned on the eve of the 2019 season to take the head coaching job at Carthage College in Kenosha. Brandon Johnsen, the Franklin boys coach, takes over the girls program and will lean heavily on senior Mallory Swartz, a Bowling Green recruit, to keep the beat going for a program chasing a sixt straight Southeast Conference championship. Swartz, who played in the final group on the final day of the Wisconsin State Women's Open Championship this summer, will form a solid 1-2 punch with junior Claire Fugate, but the Sabers depth is as tenuous as it has been during its recent reign and that could open the door for others to challenge Franklin's dominance by the time the conference championship rolls around. Oak Creek coach Joe Cota has a strong No. 1 golfer in Ellie Behring, part of a strong junior class that includes Eliza Roman and Isabella Walden. Meanwhile, at Racine Case, coach Pete Berry graduated a "very consistent and terrific team captain" in Lauren Chiappetta, but brings back four other golfers who should keep the Eagles in the chase for a top two finish in the conference.
