Madison Edgewood | 2019 WIAA D2 regional champs

MIDDLETON — Anaka Leske put to rest early Wednesday the notion that Pleasant View Golf Course was too wet and too squishy to play it well.

The Madison Edgewood senior birdied the first hole to set a positive tone for the defending WIAA Division 2 state champion Crusaders at the start of a rainy regional on a course that took on nearly 4 inches of rain overnight.

And then Grace Welch lowered the boom down the stretch. The UW-Green Bay recruit shot 1-under-par 35 on the back nine to grab medalist honors with a 76 as Edgewood began pursuit of its 15th state championship by shooting 333 and claim the title at the regional it hosted against great weather odds.

Wisconsin Dells (367), Cambridge (392) and Darlington (437) earned the other three sectional berths, which went to top four teams. Also advancing were the top four golfers not on those teams: Senior Jade Hildebrand of first-year tournament participant Nekoosa, Allison Kennedy of Prairie du Chien, Alexis Deavers of Edgerton and Morgan Cooley of Lancaster.

"I was very proud of my girls (Wednesday)," Edgewood coach Peggy Gierhart wrote in a message to Wisconsin.golf. "There was 3.8 inches of rain at Pleasant View and they really played well considering the conditions. It was cold and windy and it’s exhausting to walk in those wet conditions. I was pretty impressed with Pleasant View being open at all."

Indeed, this WIAA regional was one of just five across the state not to be postponed to Thursday or Friday the only one south of Wisconsin Rapids.

But Leske's birdie on the oening hole proved there was success to be had Wednesday. She finished with an 84 and finished third behind Welch and fellow teammate Caitlyn Hegenbarth (80) for the Crusaders, who got a sixth-place showing from junior Grace Jaeger (93) in their 333 total.

In anticipation of the wet conditions and at the urging of the WIAA, coaches agreed bunkers would be taken out of play and lift-clean-and-place was used with preferred lies allowed one club length of where the ball came to rest.

"They were very patient and they managed the course well," said Gierhart, whose team can catch the Madison West boys for most state golf titles with another win this fall. "It’s a lot to know with all the special rules and I was very proud of them for being so prepared on that especially. They are very aware of rules and how to proceed with drops, etc. I think I’m most proud of them for that today. It was sad to see two seniors playing their last regional. But luckily I have another week at least."

Arcadia regional

Colfax senior Abby DeMoe began her quest for a fourth consecutive state tournament berth with a victory at the Arcadia regional in Holmen.

DeMoe shot 79 and edged Ariel Heuer of Osseo-Fairchild/Fall Creek by one shot to take medalist honors. Heuer, meanwhile, helped her team win the regional title with a 373 total — 15 shots better than runner-up Arcadia.

Black River Falls (417) and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau (419) earned the two remaining sectional team berths. DeMoe, teammate Morgan Schleusner (100), Cochrane-Fountain City junior Ava Pronchinske (103) and Stanley-Boyd freshman Emme Felmlee earned individual sectional berths.

Luck/Unity regional

Senior Kiernan Smith shot 81 and Maple Northwestern (396) cruised to the team title by 39 shots over runner-up Barron (435). Flambeau (443) and Spooner (460) nailed down the other two sectional berths as a team.

Only three golfers broke 100 on this day. Besides Smith, the Tigers also counted a 96 from junior McKenzie Tuura, a 105 from freshman Alison Raboin and a 114 from junior Claire Jarman in taking the team title.

Hayward senior Mary Smith (94), runner-up to Kiernan Smith (no relation), joined Grantsburg freshman Caitlin Tollefson, Ladysmith junior Jackie Wallin (103) and Luck co-op junior Jordan Kamish (103) in the playoff. Wallin and Kamish survived a three-player playoff with Hayward's Gillian Johnson.
