2020 Wisconsin State Women's Open | Jenna Anderson, Douseman

Dousman's Jenna Anderson tees off during the first round of the 2020 Wisconsin State Women's Open.

Jenna Anderson has never slept on a lead in a two-day junior golf tournament and the way the junior-to-be at Kettle Moraine High School was quoting Rocky Balboa after she got her hands on one Monday, it's a safe bet she'll come out fighting Tuesday.

Anderson landed the first punch at the Sherri Steinhauer Invitational by playing a 10-hole stretch in the middle of the first round in 3-under-par en route to a 1-over 73 at Blackhawk Country Club. Despite finishing bogey/double-bogey, the Dousman golfer will take a two-shot advantage over Oconomowoc's Grace Suter and Stoughton's Caylie Kotlowski entering the final round Tuesday when the 36-hole event moves to Pleasant View Golf Course in Middleton.

Delafield's Reagan Stuke, Anderson's teammate at Kettle Moraine, shot 77 and was tied for fourth with Waunakee's Sydney Grimm. Two-time defending champion Rachel Kauflin of Wauwatosa opened with an 81.

"Leading after Day 1 is really special, especially because of the venue and the quality of the field," Anderson wrote via text to Wisconsin.Golf. "I always tell myself, 'One step at a time, one punch at a time, one round at a time.'"

That was Balboa talking. Anderson did her talking with her clubs.

She began her round on the back nine with back-to-back birdies and then got to 3-under with another birdie on No. 14. She bogeyed No. 17 after she pulled her drive and then double-bogeyed the par-3 18th after she dumped her tee shot into a green-side bunker and three-putted after blasting out.

Anderson went to 1-under with a birdie at No. 3, but dropped back after a double-bogey on the par-4 sixth. All-in-all, though, she couldn't complain about her first trip around the tight Blackhawk CC layout.

"I feel great about my round and my game is in a great spot," Anderson wrote. "My strategy was to make sure I hit fairways because I had never been to Blackhawk before (Monday) and I was able to do that."

That will be the strategy again Tuesday in the company of Suter and Kotlowski, who both have enjoyed strong summers highlighted by top-20 finishes at both the Wisconsin State Women's Open and Wisconsin State Women's Amateur.

Suter survived Round 1 — "I’m not the biggest Blackhawk fan 😂," Suter wrote in a text — with three birdies, two bogeys and two double-bogeys. In two previous Sherri Steinhauer appearances, Suter has improved by nine strokes, on average, at Pleasant View after struggling on opening day at Blackhawk.

"I’ve only played Pleasant View twice, but from what I remember it’s pretty open and generously short so hopefully I can keep my tee shots in play and keep my wedges close," Suter wrote. "If I can do that I give myself a good shot at a low score. But, as you know, golf doesn’t always go to plan so I’m gonna just play my game and be patient."

Kotlowski showed great patience after bogeying four of her first five holes in the opening round. She played her next 12 holes in 2-under before a bogey at No. 18 dropped her into a tie for second with Suter, but is looking forward to Round 2 at Pleasant View where she shot 75 a year ago to rally to finish 11th.

"I feel like I played pretty (well) and once I got through the first couple holes I fell into my groove and hit the ball where I wanted," Kotlowski wrote. "I feel comfortable playing at Pleasant View and (if I) play my game, hopefully (I can) come back to (win)."
