WO Jessica Guiser

Hartland’s Jessica Guiser watches her tee shot during the final round of the Wisconsin State Women’s Open at Lawsonia. Guiser finished the tournament tied for third.

HARTFORD — Jessica Guiser's approach to golf has never been better and the Hartland golfer can't remember her approach shots ever being better than they were Monday.

They led to a whopping eight birdies during a 6-under-par 66 at Washington County Golf Course that helped Guiser pull away from the field at the Morgan Stanley Tour Championship and win the 36-hole major on the Wisconsin junior golf calendar by 10 strokes. Her 9-under 135 easily outdistanced recent UW-Green Bay commit Jenna Anderson (69-145) and Racine's Norah Roberts (74-146) for medalist honors.

"The part of my game that allowed me to make so many birdies was definitely my approach shots," Guiser wrote in a text message to Wisconsin.Golf. "Since the course was playing relatively short for my distance, I had wedges to short irons, allowing me to have plenty of birdie opportunities. And then once in a while a long putt would drop which were definitely my favorite birdies considering I don’t make many long putts."

Guiser, who opened with a 69, wasted no time building on the two-stroke lead over Treva Dodd that she brought into the day.

She parred her first hole before back-to-back birdies starting at No. 3. After her lone bogey on the front nine, Guiser made two more birdies in a row at Nos. 6 and 7 and turned in 3-under 33.

"Going into the second day with a lead built my confidence and allowed me to play some holes safer if needed to due to hazards or mishit shots," Guiser wrote. "After birdieing a few of the holes, I still went for those pins because I was comfortable and confident doing it all day long."

Three consecutive birdies starting at No. 11 helped her stay ahead of Anderson, who eagled No. 3 and birdied No. 8 to turn in 3-under 33 as well. However, Anderson opened the back nine with back-to-back bogeys before making four straight pars, back-to-back birdies and one more par to finish off her 69.

The last of Guiser's birdies came at No. 16. She bogeyed No. 18, but – by that point – had more than enough of a cushion to win her second straight major championship on the WPGA Junior calendar after winning The Dells Junior Golf Championship at the end of June.

"Lately, I have been working on dialing in my wedges and short irons and then giving more of my short putts a chance," Guiser wrote. "The past two days, both my putting and approach shots came together, which felt really good to be able to be in control of my game. Winning this event was special especially since there were other good rounds like Treva’s (71 in Round 1) and Jenna’s (69 in Round 2)."

In the boys competition, Rice Lake's Braeden Resnick shot a final-round 72 to close out a three-stroke victory over Ryan Darling of Green Bay (69-73).

Resnick, who opened with a 67 on Monday, overcame a double-bogey 5 on No. 6 with birdies at Nos. 3, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 to get to 9-under. He triple-bogeyed the par-3 14th hole and double-bogeyed the par-3 16th hole before finishing with a birdie on No. 18 to close out the win.

Muskego's Tyson Sparks (70) and Plover's Logan Pechinski (69) finished tied for third at 1-under 143.
