Charlie Danielson

Charlie Danielson of Osceola has made the 36-hole cut at the U.S. Open and will be paired with Phil Mickelson in the third round

Charlie Danielson made his first U.S. Open cut Friday and has a chance this weekend to make the biggest statement of his young career. As an added bonus, he gets to play with Phil Mickelson in the third round at Pebble Beach.

Danielson, the former University of Illinois standout from Osceola, shot a 1-under 70 in the second round, moved up 26 spots and made the 36-hole cut with two shots to spare. At even-par 142, he’s tied for 32nd place, nine shots behind leader Gary Woodland.

He’ll play the third round alongside Mickelson, who shot a 69 and was at 141. They are scheduled to tee off at 2 p.m. Central time. Danielson was first in at even par and Mickelson was last in at 1-under.

It appeared Danielson would be paired with Harris English until English, one of the last players on the course, eagled the par-5 18th hole as dusk was falling to go from even to 2-under.

Danielson has fallen in love with Pebble Beach, though he knows the course on California’s spectacular Monterey Peninsula could turn on him in a heartbeat. So far, it has been a good match for his temperament and his game.

“The golf course is amazing,” Danielson wrote in a text message to Wisconsin.golf. “It’s a great test and the views are unlike anything I’ve seen on a golf course. It suits my game well because there’s a lot of strategy involved and it’s not a bombers’ course.”

Danielson started on the back nine Friday and made the turn in 1-over. Then he reeled off three consecutive birdies on Nos. 2-4. He bogeyed No. 5, followed it with another birdie on No. 6 and bogeyed No. 9.

“My game is solid all around,” Danielson wrote. “I need to continue to hit fairways and make good decisions. I can tighten some things up, but I am happy to post two decent rounds.”

The 25-year-old golfer got through local and sectional qualifying to advance to his second U.S. Open. In 2016, he shot 78-81 and missed the cut at Oakmont.

Danielson missed the entire 2018 season with a knee injury and subsequent surgery and rehab. He wasn’t able to resume his career until this spring, but he has played well, qualifying for the Mackenzie Tour-Canada and finishing in the top 10 in his first two starts.

His highest score in eight rounds in Canada is 69, and he closed with a 64 two weeks ago to tie for sixth in the Bayview Place DCBank Open. He ranks eighth on the tour’s Order of Merit.
