Charlie Danielson | U.S. Open local qualifying medalist

CHASKA, Minnesota — Slowly but surely, the Charlie Danielson of old is what is new again.

The Osceola golfer continued his comeback Monday from knee surgery that cost him the entire 2018 golf season, finishing birdie-birdie-birdie to shoot 6-under-par 66 at Chaska Town Course and win the U.S. Open local qualifier by two shots. The top four golfers advanced to next month's 36-hole sectional.

"My mindset was to try and make a lot of birdies," Danielson wrote in a text to Wisconsin.golf. "I played smart (Monday) and hit it in the correct spots, was able to get a few putts to fall, too."

It was a quiet start for Danielson, who began his round on No. 10 and parred his first five holes before back-to-back birdies at Nos. 15 and 16. After making the turn in 2-under, he went birdie-birdie to open the front nine to get to 4-under and, after a bogey at No. 5, rattled off his three straight birdies to finish, taking advantage of a pair of par-5s (Nos. 7 and 9).

"(It's) important to stay level headed on the one-day qualifiers and play aggressive," Danielson wrote. "(Monday), I was able to do that."

Danielson's victory takes some of the sting out of a close call last week trying to get into the Web.com Tour's KC Golf Classic. He had five birdies and an eagle over his first 14 holes at the Monday qualifier and was 6-under with two holes to play only to finish bogey-bogey and then lose an 8-for-4 playoff for the final spots in last week's event on the PGA Tour's top developmental circuit.

"Last week was unfortunate, but golf can be a humbling game," Danielson wrote, "So I am just trying handle it in a learning fashion."

His healthy approach should be a good sign, too.

Danielson, who has conditional status on the Mackenzie Tour/PGA Tour-Canada, believes he is close to regaining the form he showed two years ago when he finished had five top-25 finishes in seven starts north of the border. He finished 21st on the Order of Merit, but the PGA Tour's secondary developmental tour does not offer a medical exemption for golfers unable to use their playing exemption the following year, meaning that Danielson will have to rely on his limited status to get into events.

Of course, he could avoid all of that by playing his way into the U.S. Open and taking his comeback story to a whole new level. Sectional qualifying will be held June 3 at eight sites around the country with the U.S. Open set for June 13 through 16 at the famed Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links.

"My health has continued to slowly improve but I am still only about 90 percent," Danielson wrote. "(I) hope to be close to 100 percent by June or July."
