BERLIN -- Truth be told, Joe Du Chateau can play Pebble Beach GL and Spyglass Hill GC just about any time he wants.
However, as authentic as the simulator may project the Monterey Peninsula at Donny Du's in Fond du Lac -- his dad's sports bar that offers it among the many famous courses you can play with friends over a few drinks -- there is something to be said for getting the chance to play them for real. And here's what Joe Du Chateau had to say Monday after he earned the chance to do so with his runner-up finish at the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Mascoutin GC:
"It means a ton to me to qualify for the US Am at Pebble!" Du Chateau wrote in a text message to Wisconsin.Golf. "When I saw the qualifier on the schedule I didn’t even know it was at Pebble so I went and looked and it became a goal of mine to qualify for it this year. It means a lot to be able to achieve that."
The timing is curious, indeed. Du Chateau graduated from UW-Green Bay more than a year ago, but said Monday that he has committed to spending this summer trying to determine if he wants to play golf professionally.
His showing on a tough course set-up at Mascoutin suggested he might have some potential. Du Chateau made nine birdies against five bogeys in shooting rounds of 71-69. His 4-under-par 140 total left him two shots behind medalist Brian Ohr, who will be a fifth-year senior at Miami (Ohio) this fall. They were the only golfers under par among the 62 who finished the 36-hole marathon.
Marquette golfers Hunter Eichhorn and Austin Kendziorski were the first and second alternates, respectively, after they finished at 1-over 145 along with Scott Schlader, a high school junior from Phoenix, Arizona; and Cole Bradley, a sophomore-to-be at Purdue. Eichhorn earned his status on the on the fourth playoff hole; Kendziorski outlasted the other two on the sixth extra hole.
University of Wisconsin golfer Jordan Hahn (73-73) and University of Minnesota golfer Thomas Longbella (74-72) of Chippewa Falls were among four golfers in a tie for seventh at 2-over 146. Burlington native and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, fresh off his victory Sunday in the American Century Celebrity Championship in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, shot 74-76 and tied for 15th at 6-over 150, 10 strokes behind the final qualifying berth Du Chateau earned.
"The key to my day was just trying to stick to my plan of hitting greens and being patient out there," Du Chateau said. "It’s 36 holes so pars are always good and birdies will come!"
After a couple here and a couple there, the birdies came in bunches on his final nine holes. Du Chateau bogeyed the par-4 third hole and then rattled off three straight birdies to position himself safely inside of the cutline.
He birdied the par-3 fourth hole by holing a 40-foot putt and then stuffed his approach shot on the par-4 fifth hole to a foot and made the putt to get to 3-under. His last birdie came on a par-5.
"Those three birdies I made late in the round were awesome," Du Chateau wrote. "I didn’t really know where I stood or anything. I wasn’t following the scoreboard since we had finished our first 18 and I knew someone (Ohr) had shot 4-under, but others were still out there. So I really didn’t know!
"It helped my confidence a lot, but I thought there might be someone out there doing something similar. (Getting to) 3-under was the goal as I set out (for Monday) and once I got to 4(-under) I felt good. Walking off 18 I was just hoping it was good enough. Like I said, I wasn’t watching scores but others in my group were and said my score was looking really good."
Almost as good as Pebble Beach will look once he gets to California.
