JANESVILLE — A six-hour rain delay Friday did little to dampen the spirits of Matt Tolan in the first round of the Ray Fischer State Amateur Tournament.

Then again, a cooperative putter will shine a lot of light on anyone's day.

Such was the case for the 2017 Wisconsin State Amateur champion from Eau Claire, who credited his work on the greens for his fast start and his sizzling finish that led to a 7-under-par 65 at Janesville Riverside Golf Course. Tolan will take a two-stroke lead over Stoughton's Owen Butler and Tyler Leach, a Marquette University golfer from Spring Valley, into what figures to be a long Saturday trying to get the 72-hole event back on schedule heading into Sunday, when the low 60 golfers plus ties play the final 36 holes.

Heavy rain pummeled the course at 7:30 a.m. Friday and forced a suspension in play until 1 p.m. Half the field did not finish its opening round and those golfers are scheduled to be back on the course at 6 a.m. Saturday to finish Round 1.

"The total time for the delay was right around 6 hours, but I didn’t really let that affect me," Tolan wrote in a text message to Wisconsin.golf after the University of South Dakota golfer made seven birdies and an eagle to go with two bogeys on a day in which golfers were allowed to play lift, clean and place. "All day, the putter kept me going and it felt good to roll in a lot of putts today. The course was wet, but the greens held really well so it allowed for aggressive play at flagsticks to try and make birdies."

There were 254 birdies and nine eagles made Friday among the 94 golfers who posted a completed score during the opening round. Among the 12 golfers within five shots of the lead, however, only two — University of Wisconsin golfer Pete Kuhl (69) and former Cardinal Stritch golfer Colton Duwe — escaped with fewer than two bogeys on his scorecard.

"(The) course drained really well," Butler said after making five birdies and an eagle with two bogeys. "(The) greens weren't as fast as normal, probably, but that was OK with me. I got off to a nice start with a birdie on 1 and another on No. 4. (I) got a nice boost with an eagle at No. 6. I hit a great drive but followed that up with a very poor second shot and missed the green. But (I) had all the green to work with and chipped it in for eagle. It felt good to be (3-under) through six as you know this tournament is going to be a shootout."

For Leach, the Big East Conference freshman of the year at Marquette, it felt good to be in the thick of the chase one round into the 72-hole birdiefest.

"My putting definitely got me going (Friday)," Leach wrote via text to Wisconsin.golf after birdieing two of his first three holes on the back nine to start his round, two of the last three holes on that side making the turn and three holes in a row starting at No. 2 to get to 6-under at one point.

"The course was playing pretty easy and gave you a lot of good birdie looks. But if you want to make birdie, you have to make the putt regardless of how far it is. And (Friday) I was able to do that for the entirety of my round. I knew if I kept hitting greens I could make just about any putt and I just tried to give myself as many opportunities as I could."

Leach knows that needs to be the game plan going forward if he expects to keep pace with a field full of golfers capable of going low.

"For me, the key moving forward is going to be staying out of my own way," wrote Leach, who is making his first start in what is annually a glimpse at tournaments to come on the state amateur circuit. "I know I’m a player capable of winning this tournament and making a lot of birdies. I just have to expect that of myself before it happens otherwise it’s not going to.

"I’m really looking forward to the challenge the rest of the week."

So is Tolan, who shot 69-74-70-70 and finished 21 shots behind winner Jack Schultz of Whitefish Bay.

"The key going forward would be to keep the same energy I had going (Friday) and keep take each shot one at a a time," he said.
