Wisconsin golfers will have the honor of striking the first tee shots at both courses being used for stroke-play qualifying Saturday during the first round of the 41st U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

41st U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship

WHEN: Saturday, Sept. 10 through Thursday, Sept. 15.

WHERE: Erin Hills in Erin, Wis., and Blue Mound G&CC in Wauwatosa, Wis.

ADMISSION: Free (Free parking is onsite at Erin Hills and at Blue Mound is in the eastern side of the Mayfair Mall parking lot.)

SCHEDULE: Saturday/Sunday – Stroke-play qualifying (Erin Hills/Blue Mound). The field will be cut from 264 competitors to the low 64 for match play. If necessary, a playoff will be conducted to determine the last qualifiers for the match-play draw. Monday – Round of 64 (Erin Hills). Tuesday – Round of 32 and Round of 16 (Erin Hills). Wednesday – Quarterfinals and Semifinals (Erin Hills). Thursday – Championship (36 holes at Erin Hills).

ELIGIBILITY: Open to any amateur golfer who has reached their 25th birthday as of Sept. 10 and whose Handicap Index does not exceed 3.4.

WHAT THE WINNER GETS: A gold medal; custody of the Robert T. Jones Jr. Memorial Trophy for one year; exemption into 2023 U.S. Open at The Los Angeles Country Club; exemptions from qualifying for the next 10 U.S. Mid-Amateurs; exemptions from qualifying for the next two U.S. Amateurs; likely invitation to the 2023 Masters Tournament (must be an amateur).

FAST FACTS: Erin Hills becomes the fifth U.S. Mid-Amateur venue to have previously hosted a U.S. Open, joining Bellerive CC in St. Louis, Cherry Hills CC in Denver, Atlanta Athletic Club and Hazeltine National GC in Chaska, Minn. ... Stroke-play co-host Blue Mound G&CC was the first course in Wisconsin to host a major championship, the 1933 PGA Championship.


Milwaukee's Jack Schultz will be the first to play off the first tee at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club in Wauwatosa at 6:50 a.m. CDT Saturday when the 36-hole qualifier gets underway. Following him to the tee will be Fond du Lac native Mark Scheibach, a former University of Wisconsin golfer who is now the general manager at The Thermal Club near Palm Springs, Calif. Janesville's Sam Van Galder will hit the first tee shot off the 10th tee at Blue Mound during Saturday's opening round.

Mequon's Nate Colson (No. 1) and Hartland's Ryan Zikeli (No. 10) will do the honors to start play off both sides of the golf course at Erin Hills, which will play host to the match-play portion of the six-day event starting Monday.

Among the other highlights of the qualifying-round pairings:

  • Former Marquette golfer Brandon Cloete, who now lives in Madison and won the qualifier on his home course at Blackhawk Country Club, will tee off at 8:29 a.m. Saturday at Erin Hills.
  • Defending champion Stewart Hagestad will lead the 7:23 a.m. group off No. 1 at Blue Mound.
  • River Falls native Sammy Schmitz, who now lives in Farmington, Minn., will tee off at 8:07 a.m. off No. 10 at Blue Mound.
  • Four-time U.S. Mid-Am champion Nathan Smith of Pittsburgh will lead the 8:18 a.m. group off No. 1 at Blue Mound.
  • John Wright of Oswego, Ill., who also qualified out of Blackhawk CC in Madison, will tee off at 7:34 a.m. off No. 10 at Blue Mound.
  • West Bend native Preston Dembowiak, who now lives in Kernersville, N.C., will tee off at 12:12 p.m. off No. 10 at Blue Mound.

The United States Golf Association announced Monday tee times for the first two rounds of the championship and the yardage/par at which golfers will play the qualifiers at Erin Hills (7,358 yards, par 71) and at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club (6,726 yards, par 70).

The U.S. Mid-Amateur consists of 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying Sept. 10 and 11, after which the 264-player field will be reduced to the low 64 scorers. There will be six rounds of match play at Erin Hills, starting Sept. 12. The quarterfinals and semifinals are slated for Wednesday, Sept. 14. The championship is scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole finale on Thursday, Sept. 15, starting at 7 a.m. CDT.

The U.S. Mid-Amateur champion receives a full exemption into the 2023 U.S. Open Championship.
