Piercen Hunt | 2021 State Am

Piercen Hunt at the Wisconsin State Amateur last month at Westmoor CC.

KOHLER – Piercen Hunt won the Wisconsin State Amateur last month on a course, Westmoor Country Club, that has always been notoriously stingy when it comes to scoring. His winning total of 1-under 279, good for a six-stroke margin of victory, was testament to his ability to grind out pars.

The 101st Wisconsin State Open is going to be an entirely different kind of test. Sixteen players broke par in the first round – nine at Sheboygan Pine Hills Country Club, seven on the Meadow Valleys Course at Blackwolf Run – in ideal scoring conditions Monday.

More of the same can be expected over the next two days, with the 204 players switching courses Tuesday, before the low 60 scorers and ties advance to the 36-hole finale on the Meadow Valleys on Wednesday.

Hunt, of Hartland, a rising sophomore at the University of Illinois, showed that his game is adaptable as he made eight birdies – including four consecutively on the front nine – and shot a 7-under 65 on the Meadow Valleys to take a two-shot lead into the second round.

2021 Wisconsin State Open | Cameron Huss, Kenosha | R1

Cameron Huss was in third place Monday at the Wisconsin State Open after an opening-round 67 at Pine Hills Country Club.

“He’s putting the ball the best I’ve ever seen him putt it,” said Cameron Huss, a rising sophomore at the University of Wisconsin who has played a lot of golf with Hunt, including a recent practice round at Pine Hills and in the final round of the State Am. “He uses a line all the way around the ball and that thing rolls end over end every time.

“The combination of how long he is off the tee and then just putting well, he’s going to play well.”

Sam Anderson of Stoughton, a former UW player who has turned professional, was in second place alone after shooting a 5-under 66 on par-71 Pine Hills. Huss, of Kenosha, was in third after a 67 at Pine Hills.

The group at 3-under included 2012 State Open champion Andrew Steinhofer of Madison; minitour pro Peter Webb of Madison; defending State Open champion Harrison Ott of Brookfield, a fifth-year senior at Vanderbilt; and Dustin Schwab of Lodi, who won the Ray Fischer Amateur Championship earlier this summer. Steinhofer and Webb shots 68s at Pine Hills; Schwab and Ott shot 69s on the Meadow Valleys.

Hunt and Ott played in the U.S. Amateur last week, with Ott qualifying for match play before losing in the Round of 64 to red-hot Michael Thorbjornsen, who made five consecutive birdies to erase Ott’s 3-up lead and win 2 and 1.

Hunt did not advance to match play, primarily because he struggled on Oakmont Country Club’s notoriously slick greens.

“I normally really love fast greens and Oakmont was very fast,” he said. ”Just something about whatever was going on, I just really didn’t feel comfortable with the putter at all. That’s a really tough spot to be, to try to make putts and contend in a tournament like that.

“So, I got back to it and put a big emphasis on trying to figure out what was making me feel uncomfortable. There was a little bit of trial and error but I haven’t changed anything from what I was doing. Through repetition and some of the drills I’ve learned to do from (Illini) Coach (Mike) Small, it has freed me up and I putted really well today.”

Hunt rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt on the first hole, then made four in a row starting on No. 5, where he hit his approach to 2 feet. He made a 5-footer on No. 6, got up-and-down for birdie from next to the green on the par-5 seventh and then made a 10-footer on No. 8.

He added birdies from 10 feet on No. 13 and 12 feet on No. 14 before his lone bogey on the par-3 15th.

“I hit a fine shot in there to 40, 45 feet, but I was just on the wrong tier of the green and missed a 4- or 5-footer for par,” he said.

Hunt closed the round by making a 15-footer for birdie from the front fringe on No. 18.

“I’ve been striking it really well the entire summer, so I knew that tee to green, as long as I continued to do that, I was going to have looks,” he said. “It was just a matter of converting. Luckily, a lot of my looks on that four-hole stretch were pretty short ones and kind of the same with my birdies on the back.”

Anderson was even-par through 10 holes, offsetting three birdies with three bogeys, but caught fire on the back nine. He birdied Nos. 11, 12, 15, 16 and 17 to get to 5-under.

“The back nine, my caddie said, ‘Just get after it. Time to turn it on here,’” he said. “I got some putts to fall, but in all honesty, my iron and wedge game picked up those last eight holes. I didn’t have a birdie outside of 10 feet on the back nine. And then I had one hang there on the lip on 18.

“I’ve kind of gotten into a rhythm. I’ve been pretty consistent all summer.”

Ott, who won the State Open by six shots last year at Blue Mound Golf & Country Club, said it didn’t take him long to get over the sting of his loss to Thorbjornsen at Oakmont.

“As a competitor, sometimes you’re like, ‘Really? How did that just happen?’” he said. “I mean, I walked in from 17 green and I was over that one by the time we got to 18 fairway. Just in the heat of the moment, you’re kind of like ‘Dang.’ But after that, what can you do but tip your cap?”

Schwab, the director of sales at Madison-based Laser Link Golf, won the Ray Fischer Championship in June, edging Huss with a birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Schwab made five consecutive birdies in a front nine 31 (Nos. 4-8) before cooling off with a 38 on the back.

“Yeah, that was fun,” he said of the streak. “Just playing, I do that every once in a while, but not in an event. I think the longest putt of the five was probably 15 feet or so. It's kind of crazy. I had a 40-footer on No. 9 that just missed. It could have been six in a row. The hole looked really big.”

There’s a long way to go, but Hunt can join the late Bob Brue as the only golfers to win the State Amateur and the State Open in the same year. Brue won both tournaments in 1959. No one has done it since the State Am switched from match play to stroke play in 1971.
