What to watch
Big Eight Conference schools have finished first or second at the WIAA Division 1 state tournament each of the last four years, but the two schools responsible for that run — Middleton and Verona — are at their most vulnerable to keep the streak alive. Locally, though, the Cardinals and Wildcats are still the teams to beat thanks to experience at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions — Middleton with Valparaiso recruit Payton Hodson and sophomore Kate Meier; Verona with UW-Green Bay recruit Loren Shorter and twin sister Courtney. Madison West, which didn't break 460 at last year's Big Eight Championship, has gone as low as 357 already this season.
