Darius Rucker will be playing the 2017 American Family Insurance Championship. Well, sort of.
The multi-platinum and Grammy Award-winning country artist known for his smash single "Wagon Wheel" did turn 50 last May. And he loves to golf.
But his presence at the PGA Tour Champions event this June will be strictly in a fund-raising capacity. And it won't be at University Ridge GC.
Tournament officials announced Monday that Rucker will cap the first day of the 54-hole tournament on Friday, June 23 with a concert at Breese Stevens Field in Madison. Tickets for the event officially go on sale on Friday, March 10. Opening artists will be announced at a later date.
All proceeds from the concert will be donated to the Steve Stricker American Family Insurance Foundation for distribution to American Family Children’s Hospital and other charities impacting families and children in Wisconsin. The inaugural tournament in 2016 raised nearly $1.1 million for charity – one of the highest totals ever for a first-year PGA Tour Champions event.
“I'm really looking forward to being a part of the AmFam Championship this year. It's hard to beat Madison in the middle of summer,” Rucker said in a statement. “It’s going to be a great time and hopefully raise a lot of money for some worthy causes along the way.”
Rucker, an avid golfer himself who hosts a college golf tournament, has gotten to know tournament host Steve Stricker through various pro-ams over the years. His presence at this year's event is the first announced addition to tournament week for an event that far exceeded expectations during its inaugural event a year ago both on and off the golf course.
“I am so excited to have my friend Darius be a part of tournament week,” Stricker said in a statement. “His concert on Friday night will be a real treat for the city of Madison. I can’t thank Darius enough for helping us make an impact with our Foundation.”
The 2017 PGA TOUR Champions American Family Insurance Championship will take place June 23-25 at University Ridge golf course in Madison and will feature the championship playing debut of tournament host Steve Stricker. Tickets for the second annual event are now available for purchase online at AmFamChampionship.com.
