Mike Van Sickle

Mike Van Sickle has his future right where he wants it heading into the final round of the second stage of Web.com Tour Qualifying School: Right, smack-dab in front of him.

The former Marquette golfer made seven birdies and four bogeys Thursday in a 3-under-par 69 that kept him in fifth place after three rounds of the 72-hole event. His 54-hole total of 11-under 205 is five shots behind leader Vince India of Deerfield, Illinois (65-65-70), who at 16-under 200 has a one-shot lead over Minnesota’s Don Constable (66) and Tennessee’s Grant Leaver (68).

The top 20 golfers plus ties after Friday’s final round will advance to next month’s final stage of Web.com Tour Q-School. There, golfers are guaranteed no worse than conditional status on the Web.com Tour for 2018 as well as financial breaks for PGA and Web.com Tour open qualifiers.

Van Sickle, 30, who has played in six Web.com Tour events dating to 2009 and has yet to make a cut, birdied his first two holes Thursday to get to 10-under for the week. He gave one shot back with a bogey at No. 4, but birdied his next two holes and -- after bouncing back from a bogey at No. 7 with a birdie at No. 9 -- made the turn in 3-under 33. He followed a birdie-bogey -birdie start with five pars and a bogey to finish the day where he started in fifth place.

Van Sickle will be in the penultimate pairing on Day 4, playing with Florida’s Jimmy Stanger and Georgia’s Mark Silvers. The three will go off the first tee starting at 8:50 a.m. CST.

PGA Tour

A promising start went south in a hurry for Mequon native Jordan Niebrugge in the first round of the OHL Classic at Mayakoba where the medalist of Monday's open qualifier bogeyed four holes in a row on the front nine and shot 76.

Niebrugge birdied Nos. 12 and 13 early in his round to get to 2-under-par only to bogey his next four holes in a row to fall to 2-over. Things only go worse from there as the former Oklahoma State golfer double-bogeyed No. 2 and went bogey-birdie-bogey starting at No. 6 en route to a 76 that left him in a tie for 126th place, 14 shots behind leader Patton Kizzire (62)

PGA Assistants Championship

Andy Hansen of University Club in Milwaukee shot 76 and Andrew Troyanek of Rivermoor GC in Waterford shot 77 in Thursday's first round, leaving them with work to do to make the 36-hole cut at the National PGA Assistants Championship at the Wanamaker Course at PGA GC in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

Hansen trails the four golfers tied for the lead by 10 strokes. He started on the back nine and turned in 1-over-par 37 before a double-bogey and two bogeys set him back. The 72-hole event continues Friday at Port St. Lucie.

Nevada Open

River Falls' Neil Johnson had four birdies, four bogeys and two eagles in a 4-under 68 that left him in a tie for 21st place at the Nevada State Open at Mesquite, Nevada. He finished the 54-hole event at 8-under 208, which was eight shots behind Trevor Simsby of Carlsbad, California.
