Bobbi and Nicki Stricker

Nicki Stricker, top, caddies for daughter Bobbi at the 2018 Wisconsin State Women's Open at Janesville CC.

MILWAUKEE — Her dad spent many a summer's day competing at Brown Deer Park GC, but even the great Steve Stricker bettered a 66 just twice in 46 competitive rounds there in 13 starts at the Greater Milwaukee Open.

But that wasn't the most remarkable thing about Bobbi Stricker doing it Monday during the opening round of the Badger Mutual Insurance Women's Amateur. The most amazing thing about her 7-under-par 66? It was the first time that the University of Wisconsin golfer ever broke par in competition.

Stricker made nine birdies, including five in a row making the turn from No. 16 through No. 1, and just two bogeys. She will take a three-stroke lead over Eastern Kentucky golfer Mikayla Hauck of Cottage Grove into Tuesday's final round of the 36-hole event with former Badgers teammate Aya Johnson and North Dakota State golfer Taylor McCorkle six shots back at 1-under 72.

"It was so, so, so much fun," said Bobbi Stricker, whose mom Nicki — caddie for many of her husband's most memorable rounds at the GMO — is on the bag for her oldest daughter this week. "It was very special and so cool to hear some of the stories from my mom as we walked around. It was awesome."

After a birdie/bogey start beginning her round on the par-5 10th, Stricker lit it up the rest of the way on the back nine. She birdied the other two par-5s on the back nine (Nos. 13 and 15) and then rattled off birdies at Nos. 16, 17 and 18, all par-4s, to turn in 5-under 32 with a four-shot lead on Johnson.

"I was just hitting it in there and making putts," Stricker wrote via Twitter message to Wisconsin.Golf. "Those putts for birdie on all those holes except 17, which was around 20 feet, were around or inside 10 to 12 feet. ... My putter was feeling so good, I was confident in my stroke."

Stricker rolled in another birdie putt on the par-5 first hole and, after a bogey on the uphill, par-4 second hole, she completed her sweep of par-5 birdies with two more at Nos. 4 and 6. She parred in for a 2-under 34 on the front.

"I don’t know if that string of birdies ever really changed my whole outlook on what I was doing, but maybe made me realize that this round could be really special," said Stricker, a redshirt sophomore at for the Badgers who couldn't remember shooting lower than 2-over in a competitive round. "I started the day feeling really good and confident in my ability in playing this course so I guess that never really changed. But I wanted to make sure I kept my head down, not get ahead of myself, and finish the good round that I had going."

Stricker will have her hands full Tuesday with Hauck, who has fashioned a pair of runner-up finishes at the Wisconsin State Women's Open and the Wisconsin State Women's Amateur around getting married at the end of June.

Hauck went birdie/bogey three times on the back nine (at Nos. 10 and 11, Nos. 13 and 14 and Nos. 16 and 17) to turn in even-par 37.  She eagled the par-5 first hole and then added birdies at the par-3 fifth and par-4 ninth to close within three of Stricker, who played five groups ahead of her.

The winner of this event receives an exemption into the Symetra Tour PHC Classic. The fourth annual stop on the LPGA's developmental tour will be played Aug. 10 through 12 at Brown Deer Park.
