PINEHURST, North Carolina — Lexi Harkins got back on course Saturday and stayed on course approaching the halfway point of the LPGA Q-Series.
One day after rain wiped out the scheduled third round, the former University of Wisconsin golfer made 17 pars and one birdie and remained in contention during the opening weekend of the 144-hole qualifier for LPGA Tour status during the 2019 season. Her 1-under-par 71 left her in a tie for 26th place at 3-over 219, which is 14 shots behind third-round leader Klara Spilkova of the Czech Republic but only six shots outside the top 10 after 54 holes.
One round remains at Pinehurst No. 6 before Q-Series moves to Pinehurst No. 7 for the final four rounds of the marathon next weekend. The top-45 finishers and ties receive LPGA membership in Category 14 on the LPGA Priority List with the remaining competitors earning Symetra Tour status.
Harkins parred No. 1, birdied the par-5 second hole and then parred her final 16 holes to finish off her 71. There were 26 sub-70 rounds as LPGA officials moved tees up, according to Spilkova, whose bogey-free 69 included nine straight pars to end the round after shooting 3-under 33 starting on No. 10.
Edgerton native Allyssa Ferrell shot her best round of the week, a 2-over 74, but slipped into a tie for 92nd place at 11-over 227. She is now six shots outside of the top 45.
