Sarah Busey | 2019 WWSGA match play second round

LA CROSSE — Sarah Busey and Abby Cavaiani played so well Sunday morning that, even when others in the Wisconsin State Women’s Amateur gained on them during the afternoon session of the 36-hole opener, they left La Crosse Country Club still well ahead of the field at the end of a long, long day.

Busey, a Santa Clara University golfer from Racine, shot 71-77 and, at 4-over-par 148, held a three-shot lead over Cavaiani, a Missouri State golfer from Wales who opened 72-79. Speedy Kent, a Wofford golfer from Mequon, was seven shots off the pace after shooting 77-78.

“Overall, it was a solid day, a lot of good shots to be proud of,” Busey wrote in a text message to Wisconsin.golf. “I wasn’t loving my afternoon swing but I did my best to push through.”

With college and/or high school golfers scattered in all four flights of the two-day event, this gathering of the state’s top female amateurs features one of the deepest fields in years.

After just five of the 32 golfers in Championship Flight broke 80 during the morning round, 10 shot in the 70s during the afternoon. Interestingly, Busey and Cavaiani found it harder to score during the afternoon, when the winds picked up and the course firmed up, than in the morning.

“The morning round was much softer which made it easier to keep the ball in the fairway, hold greens, and have softer conditions when chipping from touch places,” Cavaini wrote via text to WIsconsin.golf. “The afternoon round got firmer, which made it tougher for me to adjust with irons and with chipping. There were portions of my round where I would hit some really good shots and putts, but I just wasn’t consistent enough to get in a groove in the second round.”

Busey, who started her morning round on No. 14, parred her first seven holes before going birdie-bogey-birdie starting at No. 3. She added a birdied at the par-4 No. 8 to get to 2-under, but bogeyed No. 11 with three holes to go and parred out for the day’s lone sub-par round.

Starting her afternoon round on No. 4, Busey opened with a bogey and finished the front nine with a pair of bogeys. Her troubles continued on the back nine with a bogey at No. 10 and a double-bogey at No. 11 before parring nine of her last 10 holes around a birdie at No. 16.

“Typically, the more I see a course the more I’m able to score,” wrote Busey, the two-time defending Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association match-play champion. “But when the wind picked up a little bit in the afternoon I was finding myself getting a little loose with the approaches and making some errors with the putter as well.”

Cavaiani, who had two bogeys and two birdies in her even-par 72 during the morning, had seven bogeys and one double-bogey to go with two birdies in the afternoon. Like Busey, Cavaiani struggled near the turn, playing Nos. 6 through 11 in 5-over, before playing her last seven holes 1-over with five pars, a birdie at the par-5 12th and a double-bogey 7 at No. 14.

“(Monday), I’m going to stick to my game and see what happens!” Cavaiani wrote. “Sarah and I have played a lot together over the years so I am just excited to play with her again! It should be a fun day!”
