HARTFORD -- There was a new wrinkle to the WWSGA State Match Play Championship that produced an upset of March Madness proportions Sunday at Washington County GC.

In an effort to cut right to the chase of head-to-head matches, tournament organizers eschewed traditional 18-hole, stroke-play qualifying and assigned seeds to the top 16 entrants to championship flight. Mari Suokko isn't sure where she would have wound up had the format stuck to its long-standing way, but she'll gladly take her spot in the second round.

The Ferris State golfer from Union Grove, the No. 15 seed, shocked No. 2 seed and former University of Toledo golfer Allison Schultz, who now lives in the Madison area, 2-and-1, in Sunday's first round of match play competition. Suokko advanced to play incoming UW-Green Bay freshman No. 7 Ashley Kulka of Beaver Dam, a 2-and-1 winner over Loyola (Ill.) golfer Maddie Neumeier of Green Bay, in the Monday quarterfinals.

Drake University golfer Grace Dunn of Brookfield, the No. 1 seed, pulled out a 1-up victory over Weber State-bound Taitum Beck of Waterford, the No. 16 seed. Dunn will play Syd Wells, who edged Eastern Tennessee State-bound Jordann Handy of Oshkosh 3-and-2.

Defending champion Mikayla Smith of Appleton, a Xavier (Ohio) golfer, rolled past UW-Green Bay's Leah Birch of Kenosha and into the quarterfinals against Speedy Kent of Mequon, who beat UW-Eau Claire-bound transfer Ashli Stolen 6-and-5. Cottage Grove's Mikayla Hauck, an incoming sophomore at Eastern Kentucky, and Brookfield veteran Maggie Leef, who will be inducted into the WSGA Hall of Fame, this fall also won their opening matches.

The quarterfinal matches begin at 8 a.m. with semifinals to follow.
